How to Organize Prismacolor Pencils

I am frequently asked how to organize Prismacolor pencils, so I decided to make a video showing you in which color order I put my 150 Prismacolor Premier colored pencils. Taking the time to organize my pencils has made it so much easier for me to find the colors I am looking for when I sit down to a coloring page or project. I find that I get a lot more use out of the pencils.

Here is the order I put them in…

1) Core 36 in Tri-Tone Sets

I start by organizing my core 36 pencils into tri-tone sets. This gives me quick access to the colors I use most in convenient light, medium and dark colors. These tri-tone sets match the colors found on an artist color wheel: yellow, yellow-green, green, blue-green, blue, blue-violet, violet, red-violet, red, red-orange, orange and yellow-orange.

2) Gray Pencils

Next I have my lovely gray colored pencils. I love the Prismacolor gray pencils and like to have them in order from cool grays to warm grays.

3) Skin Tone Pencils

The next pencils in my set are organized by skin tone colors. These colors are wonderful for portraiture and coloring facesโ€“both light and dark skin tones.

4) Back of the Prismacolor Box

And finally, I organize the remaining colored pencils by the order found printed on the back of the Prismacolor 150 Box. I use these pencils to complement the core 36.

Hi, I only have the 72 set….. would that set be able to be used with the colors you have chosen for your organization? Such as the 36 core, etc?

Hi Donna ๐Ÿ™‚ No, you would either need to get the 150 set; or, you could buy the missing pencils open stock.

    Hi,
I want to arrange my 150 prismacolor set in the same order as you do. Is there any way for me to buy just the list of the 36 pencils that make up the “color wheel” section (first 12 elastic sections) of your case?

    Hello,
I really like these color pencils but I am not sure where to get them.
    Where do you get them?
    How much does it cost?
    Where can you order them?
Can we pay with Saudi Riyals?

    Hey Jen!

Do you have something for the Prisma Veri Thins? I love using these for fine details on faces! Thanks and Merry Christmas!

Hi Christine, we don’t have anything specifically for Verithins; however, many of the tools and videos we have for Prisma might apply.

    Hi Jen!
Could you please tell me what the correct capacity count is for the two cases you demonstrated organizing the Prismacolor 150 set with?

Iโ€™ve clicked on the link you provided which brought up the 120 count case, but if I purchase two cases it seems I may have an over-abundance of empty space? Please advise! I just LOVE your genius organization are want to successfully duplicate it! Thanks so much!๐Ÿ˜˜

Hi Wendy, yes…I have my Prisma 150s in 2 of those cases. I wish that they made a 150! But where I tend to organize my pencils in sets such as my tri-tone picks, and portrait, etc. it’s kind of nice to have the extra space to move things around. So I don’t mind.

      Hi Wendy,
It’s been almost a year since you posted this comment, but I thought I’d let you know that there are many pencil cases on Amazon that have 150+ slots! I found one for about $15 that had 168 slots ๐Ÿ™‚ Just look up “pencil case 150 slots” and you should be able to find one that’s close after scrolling for a short while.
