I would fold in half, open, slide in cutting matt, use exacto to cut the top layer, then seal that envelope. Just sayin’ … might be easier.

When I first saw this DIY gel pen clutch video, I thought it wouldn’t work! Boy, was I wrong! I finally got the proper envelopes and, by following your instructions, got one made. Not only does it comfortably hold 40 gel pens, it actually feels sturdy enough to last awhile. Thanks for sharing this idea!
Sorry I’m so late! I love this idea. I have a materials question. Can laminated paper be creased? What if I ran at least the pre-decorated outer envelope through a laminator while it’s still intact, and cut off the excess laminate around the sides when we trim the edges off? That would make the final envelope strip laminated on one side only, which is lighter weight than sending a single sheet through to be laminated on both sides. Then would it be much more sturdy for longer term use? The inside would still be paper and willing to be taped together. But is there a drawback that I’m not considering? Like, if it won’t crease or or it pops open, or whatnottery? Do you have any craft expertise that warns me that this wouldn’t work?
