5 Steps to Coloring for Pain Relief

5 Tips for Coloring Bliss–Pain Relief

Compiled & Practiced by Jennifer Stay

Coloring is a powerful tool. It can calm your mind, relax your body, eleviate depression, and distractract you from pain. This blissful state promotes healing, creativity, and overall well being.

This is how I color for pain relief:

1: Get Comfortable

In my home, next to my favorite most comfy chair, I have a stash of favorite art tools always ready and waiting for me. The first step is to select art tools that are easy for you to use and then keep them in a convenient place where you will use them often. Choose a supportive and comfortable chair (I elevate my feet). Do everything you can to make yourself relaxed before you begin. Are you warm enough? Is the lighting right? Get a glass of water. Finally, before you begin take a deep breath and relax the muscles in your body. Pain causes unconscious tension..–make the release of this tension part of your coloring ritual.

2: Create–Don’t Produce

In school and work, so much emphasis is put on the end result and achieving perfection. This coloring time is about healing and creating, not about producing masterpieces of art. Let go of any expectations you have for your coloring page. The process of creating is where the pain relief will come. Learn to relax into the artwork and ignore your inner critic. This is not the time to over analyze light and contrast, color balance, or whether you stayed inside the lines. No one has to see your art unless you choose to let them, so embrace your inner 5 year old and start coloring.

3: Immerse Yourself

You know that wonderful feeling when you first slip into a nice warm bubble bath? That’s the feeling we want to create when coloring. Immerse yourself in the entire artistic experience. I love the way my markers smell when I first pull off the cap. I take time to run my fingers across the paper and feel its texture. I like to watch the colors fill the spaces of the paper and see how it changes the way the art feels

4: Let Time Pass

There are times when coloring has helped me endure hours of pain. I get lost in the bliss of creation, and at the end of the journey I have a beautiful piece of art to enjoy. When you sit down to color, put away your clocks and phones and just let the time pass. Set an alarm to remind you when you need to stop and then let the art completely distract you from pain, stress, and all other things that are out of your control.

5: Nurture Your Body and Soul

Have you recently watched a child coloring? They often hum, tilt their head from side to side, use their whole arm, swing their feet, and grin from ear to ear. Coloring for them is joyful and involves their whole body. While you color, try taking a deep breath every time you change colors. Drink a large glass of water while you create. Roll your shoulders and stretch your neck each time you start a new section. Think about happy things and SMILE!

Jennifer, this is wonderful. Thank you so much for your generosity. I also suffer from chronic pain and i am an artist and a ceative and expressive arts therapist. I have created ‘project angel’ as well as ‘the faces of pudendal neuralgia’ in order to raise awareness about pelvic pain.I have also created a few coloring pages that my friend distributed at the hospital where she was interning. I reached you through my facebook group that was born through ‘project angel.’ I encourage all of my fellow pain warriors to create and to share their creations with eachother. One of the women posted your beautiful invitation to coloring for healing. I am so happy that she found you! Maybe we could collobarote or at least inspire and support each other in our mission to help share the joy of art with pain-sufferers. I invite you to take a look at my artwork and mission through my website. Ataraschimmel.com

Thank you for sharing what helps you to live with pain. I belong to the club none of us wish to join. I have DID and believe it is largely responsible for all else I suffer. I’m going to try coloring again and ignore the inner critic. I never had a childhood; maybe I can make a start now. 🙂

You’re welcome Leslie! Definitely start coloring and ignore your inner critic–just have fun! 🙂

Your ideas opened up a new way for me to try and distract from pain. Getting rid of that inner critic seems to be my biggest challenge (keep reminding myself of 5 year old). Have been coloring to quiet the mind but it hurt after a short time. Getting a little table, making a lap desk from a very firm pillow and a dry erase calendar. I got comfortable with heating pads and packs and started on one of your pages.Had to use colored pencils because the markers made the ink jet in bleed. It did distract me from some of the intense nerve pain for a while. Thank you, I never would have thought of this on my own.

I just found your website. Thanks for the tips. I too suffer from chronic pain. I found adult coloring books a year ago and love them. They help me stay creative and lit me away from my pain when I can’t be creative any other way.

I too discovered adult coloring books about a year ago. I too suffer from chronic nerve and joint pain due to severe arthritis. When my hands are having a good day I love to do any kind of art, but since I was small Coloring has always been my favorite. This type of activity has always been a good distraction from pain. I love your website and your coloring pages and was very inspired to try following your 5 tips for coloring bliss pain relief.

Thank you, Jennifer. I discovered you via Pinterest. And yes, coloring helps reduce my pain. I’m glad I found this post tonight because I needed to be reminded to not try to be “perfect” at coloring and just color for the fun of it and how it makes me feel. I even have my co-workers coloring on their breaks! I love color and the way the color goes on the paper. You are a great teacher. Thank you for sharing your talent and it helps to know that I am not alone in my pain but I also don’t have to let the pain consume me. Keep doing what you’re doing. You’re awesome!

    Hi
I have done arts and crafts all my life. I will be 60 this year, I have just lost my Mum a few months ago. I have had a really bad pain time since October, between pain and mental health, I am working my way out of not being on earth anymore. I found your colouring pages and got to see it’s not just me that colours for pain….and mental relief, thank you for showing me it doesn’t have to be a masterpiece, I was drawing and colouring then hating it, throwing it in the bin, and by the end I was even more screwed up, as usual my cry was ‘I can’t do anything right’ but through you I can see, it doesn’t have to be ‘right’ what is right? I think it’s like you show, right is what you do at the time, relaxing you, forgetting everything in your head and body, and just enjoying the colour going onto the paper. So thank you for that. You may have just kept me living! Keep on colouring is the motto lol

I put in my last comment I have had a really bad pain time since October. That makes it sound like I’ve only had this a few months, no that’s just a bad bout. I’ve had my problems since I was 28, as I will be 60 this year, I’ve had it a long time. Plus the mental health problem….always. Thank you for helping me x

I am recovering from my third back surgery and am so glad I found your web site. I am partly color blind and have not colored in 40 + years. After watching your videos, and with the help of your tools I am ready to try coloring for pain relief. I am tired of living on pain meds! I have ordered my pencils, erasers, sharpeners, pencil holders, paper punches and paper. Thank you amazon! they had everything I need and it arrived in 3 days. I am working on my color swatches and color wheels. I cant wait to start coloring!
Thank you for giving me something positive without the garbage! I hope you and everyone else who is in pain finds a way to live with the pain and enjoy life!

Jennifer thank you for doing this and I hope you are doing/feeling better. I am a disabled (hence unemployed) Nurse Practitioner. My specialties included Mental Health, Fibromyalgia, Opiate addiction, and Chronic pain management. I had my patients coloring in my waiting room with pictures and colored pencils (in hopes they would continue at home). I wish I had found you back then. Your stuff is great, thank you. I belong to and occasionally lecture to Chronic pain support groups and Multiple Sclerosis groups. I would like to share your Breath coloring page and 5 ways to manage sheet (giving you credit and promoting your site in that) if that would be OK with you. Enjoy your life one moment at a time and realize you are helping to divert people from their struggles. Love to you and yours, Wendy

Jennifer thank you for being willing to be open about your chronic pain. I lost everything due to my chronic pain and like you had to just focus on the necessities. You are an inspiration!

I have been interested in colouring for as long back as I can remember. When I was young my parents bought me Magic painting books which I loved, I used a pot of water, a paintbrush and hey presto a magic picture appeared. Later I got crayons and colouring books. I ham not a good drawer and after 79:years I dont think I will achieve a vey good drawing. I have experimented with colour pencils and just bought a tine of 24 Faber castell, polychromo pencils which I’m thrilled with.
Auitev by chance I found your web page and very much love watching you work. You have inspired me to keep practicing every day. I have chronic pain as well ,but never thought to immerse myself into art to alleviate it. What a lovely couple you and your hubby are and little Rose makes up your beautiful family. Thankyou for your inspiration, I look forward to watching more of your videos. My next small wish is to purchase more colour pencils and then one day I will hopefully get perfect results with every picture like you. Thank you.Pauline
